Childcare Facility to Open January 5th
The Valentine Children and Families Coalition has been working on opening a new childcare facility in Valentine for several years. Director Jill Austin stopped by the KVSH Studios this morning to announce that the facility will open on January 5th at the Episcopal Church on North Main Street in Valentine. The state licensed facility will start with 8 children and expand to 12 soon with employees coming on board. Andrea Egger will be the coordinator. The Coalition is a 501c3

Tree Removal To Begin At Merritt Reservoir
Revitalizing the grassland will benefit plant and animals and open spaces for hunting, fishing, birdwatching and hiking. Starting in mid-December, contractors hired by Nebraska Game and Parks will remove eastern red cedar and Rocky Mountain juniper from the prairie and shelterbelts at the wildlife management area and state recreation area near Valentine. Slight Increase in September Retail Sales
Retails sales in Valentine and Cherry County finally seen a decent increase over last year’s numbers in September. For the first time this year, Cherry County retail sales hit 10.1% improvement over 2024. The Valentine community was not quite as strong with an 8% increase. By comparison, Ainsworth was up only 4.1%, Chadron up 2.8%, Gordon was down 5.8%, O’Neill down 10.3%, Broken Bow up 4.9%. Funeral Service for Ila Mae Blake age 82 of Bassett, NE will be held on Friday, (Dec. 19, 2025) at 2:00 PM at the Sybrant Community Church south of Bassett. Weekend Fire Destroys Home South of Valentine
The initial call came in just after 1:30 on Saturday. Two flare ups following the initial call left the home a total loss. According to Valentine Volunteer Fire Chief Terry Engels, the fire at the Hammond place south of Valentine on highway 97 left the house a total loss. Rapid City Invitational Results for Valentine boys. Over 50 people enjoyed the KVSH Hometown Holiday Christmas program at the Veterans Hall at the Valentine Vets Club Sunday evening. The Vets Club staff provided chili, corn bread and lots of cookies and candies to help set the stage for the evening event. Garage Fire Spreads To Home In Saturday Afternoon Blaze
The fire was reported at the home near mile marker 132 on south hwy 97 just after 1:30 Saturday. Just after 1:30 Saturday afternoon, the Valentine Volunteer Fire Department and Cherry County Hospital Ambulance Service were requested to the report of a garage fire at the Justin and Kathy Hammond place at mile marker 132 on south Highway 97. Several students at VHS were selected to Kearney and Chadron honor bands, choirs. The Valentine High School Music Department is excited to announce that several students have been chosen to be a part of the University of Nebraska at Kearney’s Honor Music Festival on January 26th, 2026. Ag Group Applauds USDA Intervention In King Ranch Dispute
R-CALF USA commended the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for intervening in the King Ranch case in Washington state. Wreaths Across America Event Scheduled for Saturday
The event is still scheduled for Saturday. Dress warmly! National Wreaths Across America Day is Saturday, December 13. Wreaths have been ordered and will be placed on veterans’ graves at Mount Hope cemetery Saturday. City Of Valentine Hikes Water Rates After December Meeting
The City Council held its regular monthly meeting Thursday, December 11. The Valentine City Council pushed through a busy agenda at last nights regular monthly meeting. North central RC&D Awarded 2 Tire Amnesty Grants for 2026
The North Central Resource and Conservation District was informed this week that they have had two tire amnesty recycling grants approved for 2026. One grant will cover an event in Springview and the other will be in the O’Neill area. Last year the tire recycling was held in Valentine, and the response filled the 200-ton limit in less than one day, meaning some interested parties did not get to drop off their old tires.
