At about 2pm on Wednesday afternoon, the Valentine Volunteer Fire Department and Cherry County Ambulance Service were requested to respond to a fire alarm sounding in one of the basement apartment of the tenement complex just north of Heart City Drug. According to Valentine fire chief Terry Engels, there was no one in the apartment at the time, and a former tenant left a smoke detector behind, and the battery was going low, causing it to chirp intermittently.
No smoke or fire was found, and there was no threat to the residents of the complex.
As a friendly reminder, be sure to check your smoke and CO2 detectors regularly and replace the battery at least once a year.
