Well 501 was taken out of service immediately after the City received the recent nitrate test results and has now been offline for more than seven days. Open Plains Transit has informed KVSH News that they continue to struggle with getting reimbursement form Nebraska Department of Transportation to cover operating expenses for the past year. The call went out in the early morning hours on Friday, September 18. At about 2:20 Friday morning, the Valentine Volunteer Fire Department and Cherry County Hospital Ambulance Service were called to Elm Street in Crookston for the report of an oven fire. The oven was removed from the home. There was no other damage, and no injures were reported, according to Fire Chief Terry Engels. Valentine firemen returned to the fire hall after just a short time on scene.

The City of Valentine is issuing an important drinking water notice. Nitrate was measured at an average concentration of 11 milligrams per liter in two samples collected from Well 501 on August 26 and September 9, 2026. This exceeds the nitrate maximum contaminant level of 10 milligrams per liter. Adults and children older than six months can drink the tap water.
