VPD Responded to 44 calls this week. During the week of March 15th to March 21st, the following arrests were made by the Valentine Police Department: On March 18th, at 5:50PM, a traffic stop near the intersection of B and Cherry Streets lead to the arrest of a 21 year old NE male for driving under suspension. Governor Pillen Visits Valentine
Governor Jim Pillen at Valentine Fire Hall On Friday morning Governor Jim Pillen met with firefighters, emergency management representatives, volunteers and others who have been on the frontlines of firefighting efforts in Anderson Bridge Fire in Cherry County. Local Fund Set Up Through SAF for Fire Relief
] A local fund has been started for fire relief for the Anderson Bridge Fire in Cherry County. John Johnson and Carolyn Moore appeared on the KVSH Comment program Friday morning to release details of the effort. The Sandhills Area Foundation will accept donations that will first go to residents who suffered losses in the fire and then volunteer fire departments can apply for funds as well. Valentine Firemen Called Out To Possible Fire On Niobrara River Valley, Find Cloud of Cedar Pollen
Pollinating cedar trees led to the fire call mid-morning Saturday The Valentine Volunteer Fire Department was requested to smoke reported in the canyon area south of Valentine in the Niobrara River valley area near mile marker 106. Upon arrival to the area, firemen discovered that the seasonal pollen release from cedar trees was creating a smoky looking cloud of pollen. Amendment to Reinstate $34,000 for Niobrara Council
While state lawmakers continue to work on putting together a budget one item included as an amendment to the budget bill would include funds for a scenic Nebraska river. State Senator Barry DeKay of Niobrara, said the amendment would restore funding to protect the Niobrara River. The Mid-Nebraska Activities Conference has announced its 2025–2026 All-Conference Boys Basketball teams, recognizing standout performances from athletes across several conference schools. Chokecherry Prescribed Burn Declared A Wildfire
Press release from Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands The Chokecherry prescribed fire on the Bessey Ranger District of the Nebraska National Forest was declared a wildfire at approximately 4p.m. March 12, 2026. Boys Finish Great Season at 23 and 4
Chris Mosner photo The Badger boys’ basketball, team concluded a tremendous season finishing at 23 and 4 for the year. Three of the four teams the Badgers lost to are in the class C1 state tournament this week. The boys lost in overtime 57 to 56 to Freeman in the first round of the class C2 state tournament on a last second shot. Retail Sales in December One of Valentines Strongest Months of 2025
Retail sales in the final month of 2025 for Valentine were up when compared to 2024 numbers. Valentine reported $7.9 million dollars in retail sales for December which was up 7.6 percent from the previous year. When compared to other peer communities, the Heart City did better than most. Ainsworth and O’Neill retail sales in December 2025 were down 2.5%. Chadron reported a 6.2% increase, Broken Bow only up 2.5%. Keya Paha County reported a 12.5% jump, Thomas County was up

Valentine ED Update
Valentine Economic Development continues to work on several projects including housing, the theater and now is spearheading a look into parks and trails. The theater project will be awarding bids for roof work and HVAC. The total cost of the project has been estimated at around $800,000 and they have raised about $650,000 of the amount needed. Valentine FFA would like to invite everyone to the annual Hired Hand Auction and silent auction that will be held Thursday, March 19th at the Cherry County Fairgrounds.
