A large wildfire that began in the Nebraska National Forest’s Bessey Ranger District has burned nearly 36,000 acres of grassland and timber as of midnight Thursday, according to Thomas County Sheriff Joseph Smith.

Despite the rapid spread of the fire, Smith said there have been no reports of structures lost.

The incident is now being managed by the U.S. Forest Service, which is assembling an incident management team to oversee firefighting operations and provide additional updates.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by U.S. Forest Service law enforcement and fire personnel.

Dawson County Emergency Management is advising residents in far southwest Dawson County affected by the wildfire — including the town of Farnam — to remain at a safe location today as fire operations continue.

Road closures remain in place, including:

  • Highway 47 south of Gothenburg

  • Several county roads in the area

Fire crews will remain on scene throughout the day in southwest Dawson County and southeast Lincoln County, where the wildfire is still active.

Once again, Dawson County Emergency Management asks residents in far southwest Dawson County to avoid the area until it is safe to return.

A fast-moving wildfire that began Thursday afternoon in Morrill County has prompted evacuations in Garden County as shifting winds push the blaze south toward Lake McConaughy.

Authorities issued a mandatory evacuation late Thursday night for areas north of Lake McConaughy between Highway 61 and the Keith County–Garden County line as the fire rapidly moved south.
