The City of Valentine held its regular council meeting Thursday evening at the City Library meeting room. Carrie Graham presented the annual library report, highlighting their summer reading program, the 1000 Before K program that gets kids to read 1000 books before Kindergarten, and the Little Free Library that was placed at the corner of 4th and Main by the Episcopal Church that has gotten a lot of use.
The Cherry County Ag Society was scheduled to discuss the 4th of July fireworks display, however there were no representatives from the group present at the meeting. City Manager Shane Siewart stated that when he looked into the issue, he found that the city could not dedicate funds toward a fireworks display per state statute, and went on to suggest that the Ag Society probably would not be able to either, due to their classification as a political subdivision, although donations could be made to the Ag Society for that purpose.
The American Legion had representatives at the meeting requesting funds to help pay for a new scoreboard at Legion Field which is located at the city municipal baseball complex. The current board was purchased in 1995 for about $5,000 according to Kent Lopez. The 35 year old board did not function properly toward the end of the 2025 baseball season.
Representatives stated that about $12.5K had been raised so far, and that the total needed to get the scoreboard replaced would be about $24.5K. The council voted to spend $10,000 that had already been put aside for baseball diamond improvements to help pay for the new scoreboard.
And toward the end of the meeting, the city council voted to excuse council member Brad Arnold for military service. It is anticipated that Arnold will be fulfilling military obligations from late February through at least July. The council unanimously approved the appointment of Kalli Kieborz to the position.
Finally, the regular meeting date for March 2026 was moved. The city council will next meet at it's monthly meeting on March 19th at 6pm at the library meeting room.
