South Fork Fire Update

The South Fork Fire near Crawford and Harrison remains mapped at 8,989 acres, according to the Forest Service, however the fire did expand yesterday. New estimates could put the total at over 23,000 acres. Crews from Valentine, Wood Lake and Keya Paha fire departments joined the battle on Wednesday.
Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Management Team 2 is indicating that the fire is now 5% contained.
Nebraska Emergency Managers with Region 23 have issued evacuation notices for Fort Robinson State Park and a portion of the city of Crawford. Fort Robinson State Park has been evacuated until further notice.
A total of 22 structures and 95 people are currently under active evacuation orders, including the Ponderosa Villa Nursing Home. Emergency managers are working with the Red Cross to establish community shelter options, Chadron State College is currently readying to potentially support the effort.
A variety of engines, hand crews, dozers, and air support contributed to the full suppression efforts Wednesday.
Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen issued an emergency declaration, allowing activation of additional resources and access to the governor’s emergency fund to assist with costs associated with the South Fork Fire. In addition to the proclamation, National Guard resources have also been deployed, including a CH-47 Chinook helicopter and crew, support resources for the helicopter crew, and National Guard hand crews assisting with direct suppression efforts.
According to the Incident Command update today, firefighters will focus on assessing appropriate strategies and tactics based on the forecasted wind and advisories and Red Flag Warnings in the coming days. Very dry vegetation, rough terrain, and critical fire weather will continue to challenge firefighters and their ability to suppress the South Fork Fire. Firefighters and public safety continue to be the primary focus of fire managers as strategies and tactics are discussed.
With the emergency situation in place, the Nebraska Department of Transportation is advising that people use Nebraska 511 to stay updated on potential road closures and detours.
