Visitors to Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge are invited to
join National Park Service Rangers and an American Conservation Corps Intern on a new guided foraging program which explores the edible, medicinal, and culturally significant plants that thrive along the Fort Falls Trail, Saturday September 6,
2025. The program will be offered at 10:00 a.m. and again at 2:00 p.m. Central Time.
Participants will learn to identify at least two native plants with traditional or
modern uses, explain how geology and hydrology shape plant distribution, and
understand ethical foraging principles that align with conservation and
sustainability practices. It is important to note that foraging is not allowed at
Fort Niobrara National Wildlife and that this program is for identification purposes
only.
The Niobrara River Valley is one of the most unique ecological crossroads in North
America, where Eastern hardwoods, western conifers, and northern boreal species
meet, creating a living pantry and pharmacy that Indigenous communities have relied
on for thousands of years. This family-friendly program, designed for both adults
and children, highlights the deep connection between biodiversity, geology, and
human history in the Niobrara River Valley.
The program emphasizes safety and respect: foraging ethics, trail awareness, and
wildlife protection are woven into the walk. Visitors are encouraged to reflect on
reciprocity with the land, considering what actions today will preserve this
diversity for future generations. Comfortable walking shoes, water, and curiosity
are encouraged.
