On the KVSH Comment program Wednesday morning, Valentine Mayor Kyle Arganbright discussed several topics relating to various City of Valentine projects. There have been several positive projects including the new Main Street, very few vacant business fronts, numerous housing improvements, and new theater project and more.
Concerning housing, Mr. Arganbright reported that in the last 3 years the community has had over 60 new housing units of some kind erected. Arganbright referred to the latest census data that shows some population growth in Valentine and Cherry County. The next housing development area in Valentine would be east of Valentine High School on city owned property. They have secured funding and easements for the sanitary sewer ‘Interceptor” line to serve that area. They hope to start infrastructure work in 2026.
The city also plans to extend the connector trail from South of the High School Football fields all the way to hall Street for a major East and West connection. This would be on the North side of Third Street and would be 8 feet wide pathway.
Recently, Allo Communications announced they had secured funding to expand fiber internet service to three areas around Valentine. The Chaduza Acres area West of town, The Meadow Lake area East of the cemetery and along Highway 12 East for about 4 miles.
On the topic of the Community Wellness Center, Kyle reported that they are waiting on a state grant which would fund most of the proposed project.
The city continues to look at options for Mill Pond. It would cost a few million dollars to dredge the lake and it would only silt back in over the years. They also need to consider the impacts on the fish hatchery lake and the Niobrara Scenic River downstream.
