We're several weeks into Autumn, and many trees have shed their leaves.

While conditions have been somewhere between mild and warm in the first few weeks of fall, colder weather is sure to be on the way with shorter days as we approach the winter months.  Darkness will come much earlier after this week as we “fall back” for Daylight Standard Time.  Listeners are reminded to set your clocks back an hour when you go to bed on October 31st as the time change will take place in the early morning hours on November 1st this year.

DST is observed by most states, except Arizona and Hawaii.

The practice of DST in the United States started in 1918 and has been contested and debated since.

One of the first Americans to propose something like DST was Benjamin Franklin, although it is thought to have been more of a joke than a serious proposal.

DST officially ends on Sunday, Nov. 1 and clocks will be set backward one hour.

On a related note, although the mild weather has allowed the trees to hold on to their leaves a little later than usual this year, NK Waste has notified KVSH News that the last day for yard waste pickup will be Wednesday, November 4.  If you have leaves or other yard waste, NK Waste will still accept it, however you will have to get it to the recycling center location on your own.  If you have any questions about yard waste pickup, you’re encouraged to check with NK Waste.
