Retail Sales Slow in July

Retail sales in Valentine for July of 2026 were only steady with 2025 levels according to the Nebraska Department of Revenue. Valentine sales were 1/10th of one percent lower than 2025. Given the rate of inflation this would indicate a decline in overall sales in 2026. This comes despite the height of the tourism season. By comparison, Ainsworth was down 1.6%, Gordon was down 3.5%, Chadron was down 10% and Gordon down 3.5%. Broken Bow was up 6%.
With holiday season approaching, area citizens are encouraged to shop with your local merchants before going out of town or online. 2026 has been a slow year for a lot of retail across Nebraska and more specifically in Valentine. Try local products like popcorn, candles, soaps, jellies, breads and more for gift giving or stocking stuffers. Gift certificates to local merchants are always a good gift.
