The Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands have issued a forest‑wide fire ban due to ongoing drought conditions and an elevated risk of wildfire. The ban applies to the Pine Ridge, Bessey, Fall River, Wall, and Fort Pierre Ranger Districts. These districts manage Nebraska National Forests at Bessey and Pine Ridge Ranger Districts, Samuel R. McKelvie National Forest, as well as the Oglala, Buffalo Gap, and Fort Pierre National Grasslands.Stage 1 fire restrictions will be in effect from July 18 at 6 a.m. MST until December 31, 2026 at 12 a.m. MST, or until conditions improve and the order is rescinded. The order is viewable on our alerts web page.Stage 1 fire restrictions, in summary, mean:

  • No open campfires or use of charcoal briquettes outside of U.S. Forest Service–provided metal fire rings in established campgrounds.

  • Outdoor smoking is prohibited in areas that are not cleared of all flammable material or vegetation within a three‑foot diameter.

  • The use of propane or other liquid fuel stoves within a cleared three‑square‑foot space is acceptable. Smoking is also allowed in developed recreation areas.

Motorists are encouraged to ensure trailer, boat, or RV chains have proper road clearance and to use caution when driving across or parking near dry vegetation. As a reminder, spark arrestors are always required on all fuel‑injected engines on public lands, such as Off‑highway vehicles (OHVs) and generators. These restrictions are necessary as dry vegetation, low humidity, and persistent drought have significantly increased the likelihood of rapid fire spread.Forest officials ask visitors to remain vigilant, follow posted restrictions, and report any signs of smoke or fire by calling 911 immediately.
