Battery Recycling at Ranch Expo

During the Sandhills Ranch Expo in Bassett, the North Central Nebraska RC&D hosted a battery recycling collection as part of Nebraska’s efforts to expand safe battery recycling across the state. Residents were able to bring in unwanted household batteries, rechargeable power tool batteries, and cell phones to have them handled through the proper recycling process.

The response showed that people are ready for an easier way to deal with batteries that have reached the end of their useful life. Nearly 400 pounds of batteries were collected during the two-day event, keeping them out of the trash and away from landfills where damaged batteries can create a serious fire risk.

The North Central Nebraska RC&D will continue to share information about battery recycling opportunities as Nebraska’s statewide program develops on www.northcentralrcd.com. In the meantime, avoid putting unwanted batteries in the trash. Keep them in a container, in a cool, dry place, and protect the terminals with clear packing tape or duct tape.
