Wood Lake Volunteer Fire Department responded to the report of a fire at the O'Keefe Cattle Company between Valentine and Wood Lake at about 1:30 Friday afternoon.

Valentine also sent 3 grass rigs and a tanker for mutual aid, according to radio traffic from Valentine Fire Chief Terry Engels.

Apparently a pickup was in a hay field when it caught fire, and that fire spread to surrounding vegetation. According to Wood Lake Fire Chief Craig O'Keefe, the pickup was pulling a fuel tank which was fortunately removed from the truck before igniting. The pickup was a total loss, but only a small amount of grass around the vehicle burned. O'Keefe noted that there was a nearby windrow that was also saved from the flames.

Fire crews began returning to their respective fire halls after about an hour.
