The Nebraska Brand Committee (NBC) after their Quarterly Meeting on June 10, announced updated fees effective August 1, 2026. These fee changes are allowed due to the passage of LB1187 by state congress on April 10 earlier this year.
Introduced by Senators DeKay, Holdcroft, Ibach, Kauth, Meyer, and Storm, LB1187 was passed and signed into law in April, 2026. The bill gives the committee authority to “modernize” and restructure fees.
Some notable changes made by the NBC included increasing physical inspection up to $1.40 per head (maximum allowance of $1.50–a rise from the previous $1.10 maximum), increasing singular brand renewal fees to $400 for a four-year renewal, and replacing the usual mileage charges with a $30 surcharge
per stop.
The NBC claims that the fee increases are necessary and come in response to incoming financial challenges via new legislation. For example, due to ongoing drought conditions and the recent closure of the Tyson Foods facility in Lexington, inspection rates and overall cattle headcounts are expected to decrease in the coming years.
