The National Weather Service in North Platte is predicting some relief from dry conditions this weekend. After a conversation on Wednesday with forecasters, KVSH learned that while the odds are not high for precipitation Thursday and Friday, the forecast models are indicating that the chances of significant rain Saturday into Sunday morning are quite high. Officials at the North Platte office that is responsible for the forecasts in north central Nebraska stated that there is a large front being pushed into the area by southwest winds that will be filled with moisture from the Pacific Ocean. When pressed for a prediction for total rainfall this weekend, the response was welcome, with about a quarter of an inch around Valentine proper, and up to a half inch around Cherry County to the south and west. There is also a chance for severe weather as this front collides with the hot, dry conditions that have been persisting in the region.
While the .25” -.50” of rain may not be a drought-buster, it’s a welcome wrap-up to an otherwise very dry May.
