Today, Governor Jim Pillen signed his name to the ‘Fairness For Girls’ constitutional amendment ballot petition. Should the language qualify for the ballot in November and be approved by voters, it would amend Nebraska’s Constitution to establish constitutional protections for sex-separate athletics to ensure equal access to athletic opportunities for females.

“Nobody should marginalize this issue by making it about politics — it’s simply about doing what’s right to prevent our young women from being forced to compete against biological males,” said Gov. Pillen. “It’s common sense to protect fairness for our girls, to protect opportunities like scholarships for our girls, and to protect the physical and mental wellbeing of our girls.”

“As a dad and granddad, I believe our daughters deserve an equal, fair, and safe playing field,” Gov. Pillen continued. “This is an issue that the majority of voters in our state will support – and I ask that Nebraskans take time to add their name to the petition so we can make these protections permanent in our Constitution.”

Background:

As Governor, Pillen championed and signed the Stand with Women Act into law during the first session of the 109th Nebraska Legislature, requiring that “students in K-12 and postsecondary school participate on sports teams that correspond to their biological sex, as defined in law.”
