Last week on the KVSH Whats Up Doc program with Dr. Sara Hoffscnieder she reported about the availability of Kratom in products from convenience stores in our area. A warning has been issued on the synthetic drug following the deaths of two students at the University of Mississippi recently. Two smoke shop employees face federal charges after police uncovered over 500 units of the drug. Synthetic and manufactured Kratom products can contain powerful and unpredictable substances according to authorities. Kratom is derived from a Southeast Asian tree and can produce stimulant-like effects at lower doses and opioid-like effects at higher doses. It is sometimes marketed for energy, pain relief and managing opioid withdrawal.

Dr. Hoffschnieder warns people to be aware of ingredients in over the counter purchases.
