City Council Discusses Multiple Topics Including City Parks, Elder Care, Plus Sewer and Water Infrastructure

The City of Valentine held it’s regular monthly meeting of the city council Thursday October 8th.
One of the items on the agenda was the report from the UNO Scott Scholars regarding their recent park survey. Some of the findings from the survey show that while the area enjoys many natural amenities and spaces for folks to gather and enjoy the outdoors, almost 85% of those surveyed stated that they would like to see better maintenance and complained that playground equipment was not well kept. Many in the survey referenced parks in nearby communities and expressed a desire to be competitive with those neighboring parks.
On a related note, the council later approved up to $93,750 toward a matching grant from the Nebraska Game and Parks Land Water Conservation Fund.
Peg Snell and other representatives of the Canyon Ridge Care Center addressed the council, giving them an update on their efforts to secure a long-term care facility in Valentine. Peg discussed the timeline of those efforts which began in 2024, and could lead to construction around 2029 at Cherry Hills Estates. The current facility would still be used for assisted living and senior apartments, with the new construction utilized for those needing specialized care.
There was also in depth discussion regarding the city’s sewer and water infrastructure, including the potential need for new wells to be drilled in the coming years.
The next meeting of the city council is scheduled for Thursday, November 12.
