Over $18,000 Raised in the New West All-Star Classic

The New West All-Star Classic volleyball and basketball games were held in Minden on Friday and Saturday to benefit the Nebraska Kidney Association. Over $18,000 was raised in the two day event through sponsorships and attendance.

Friday's volleyball matches began with a 4-set victory for the LouPlatte Conference over the Southwest Conference by scores of 25-21, 25-17, 14-25 and 25-17. The second match of the day found the Twin Valley Conference topping the Fort Kearny Conference in yet another 4-set win with scores of 20-25, 25-21, 25-23 and 25-14. The game between the two winners made it a perfect day for the LouPlatte all-stars as they topped the Twin Valley All-Stars in a best of 3 match, 25-18, 23-25, 25-13. Maci Coffey of Blue Hill was named tournament MVP.

Saturday's action tipped off at noon with teams of basketball all-stars from the Southwest and LouPlatte Conferences. In the girl's game, behind 34 points from Minden's MVP Brooke Kissinger, the Southwest Conference defeated the LouPlatte Conference, 82-58. In the boy's matchup, the LouPlatte Conference topped the Southwest Conference 90-84. Blake Holtmeier from Kearney Catholic was named the game's MVP.

In the final basketball games for the tournament, the Twin Valley Conference girls all-stars fell to the Fort Kearny Conference all-stars 64-76. Kinzy Enochs of Overton was named MVP as she led the FKC with 22 points. In the boys contest, MVP Mitch Ruybalid of Blue Hill led all scorers with 26 points as the Twin Valley Conference hung on for an 86-81 win over the Fort Kearny Conference.




Central Nebraska's best high school athletes will display their talents in the New West All-Star Classic Weekend to benefit the Nebraska Kidney Association. Volleyball on Friday, June 6 and Basketball on Saturday, June 7 at CL Jones Gymnasium in Minden, Nebraska.

The three-day event will feature 120 athletes from four regional conferences including the Southwest, Fort Kearny, Lou Platte and Twin Valley. Volleyball will serve up the beginning of the fun-filled weekend on Friday, June 6 at 4:00 pm followed by tip off at 12:00 pm on June 7, featuring the girls and boys from all four conferences.

Winners from both matches will play a championship game.

General admission tickets to the event are $5 for the public at the door. Proceeds from the All-Star Classic will benefit the Nebraska Kidney Association.

The Valentine Badgers qualified one individual, Brooks Coleman (11), to the 2-day Nebraska State Golf Tournament for 2014, which was held at the Mahoney Golf Course in Lincoln.

Day One:  40-41=81

Day Two:  40-39=79

Total =160 tied for 31st place out of 102 golfers
The top golfer was Rylee Reinertson (12) from Gibbon, who had a total score of 136. Sam Meuret (12) from Plainview shot a 137 and Tyler Ehresman (12) from Omaha Brownell-Talbot rounded out the top 3 with a score of 145.

Valentine High School Rodeo Scores

The Valentine FFA Alumni Rodeo was held in Valentine at the Cherry County Fairgrounds on Sunday, May 25th. A selection of the top scores are as follows:

Tristan Eklund from Valentine won Saddle Bronc with a score of 70. Samantha Vonheeder from Ainsworth won the Barrel Racing. J.T. Adamson from Cody got 2nd in Tie Down Roping. Brittni Mccully from Mullen won Breakaway Roping. Peyton Call from Mullen got 5th in Bull Riding and Sidney Hollenbeck from Winner, SD won Pole Bending.

The next Rodeo event is the Logan McPherson High School Rodeo at Stapleton, NE on May 30th. May 31st will be the Thedford High School Rodeo at the Thomas County Fairgrounds and on June 1st Mullen will have their High School Rodeo at the Hooker County Fairgrounds.


District Golf Results

District Golf took place on Monday, May 19th. Brooks Coleman took 2nd place individual runner-up and qualified for the Nebraska State Tournament May 28th and 29th in Lincoln NE at Mahoney Golf Course.

The team did not qualify for the state tournament, missing out by 1 shot. Valentine took 4th place with a 354. Only the top 3 teams qualified; 1. Bayard, 346 2. Mitchell, 350 and 3. Southern Valley, 353. Individual scores for the Badgers are as follows: Brooks Coleman - 76, Cameron Bancroft - 86, Brad Michalek - 94, Paul Orr - 98, Lyle Cate- 100. Great job to all of the golfers as they wrap up their season.
