Sioux Tribes Meet

The second of a two-day meeting between several Sioux tribes gets under way Friday on the Rosebud Indian Reservation.

 

The Rosebud Sioux Tribe is hosting officials from several other Sioux tribes as part of an effort to work together as one nation on issues they deem important.

 

Some of the issues being discussed during the meeting include education, health care, land, water and child care.

 

The Oglala Sioux Tribe hosted the first meeting of the tribes back in March.

Two SD Men In Custody of US Marshal

 

United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a St. Francis, man convicted of Simple Possession of a Controlled Substance and for Failure to Appear, charged in two separate criminal cases, was sentenced on April 2, 2013 by U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange.

Antoine Kills In Water, age 30, was sentenced to 6 months in custody, a $1,000 fine, and a $25 special assessment to the Victim Assistance Fund for the Simple Possession of a Controlled Substance conviction. He was also sentenced to 6 months and 1 day in custody, 1 year supervised release, and a $100 special assessment to the Victim Assistance Fund for the Failure to Appear conviction.

Kills In Water was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal.

Johnson also announced that Joshua Felix, age 39, of Winner, South Dakota appeared before U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange on April 2, 2013 and pled guilty to Prohibited Person in Possession of a Firearm.

Felix was convicted of domestic violence simple assault on June 15, 2004 in Tripp County. Having been convicted of a crime of domestic violence, Felix was prohibited from possessing firearms by operation of federal law. On March 15, 2012, law enforcement found Felix to be in possession of a rifle.

A presentence investigation was ordered and a sentencing date was set for June 24, 2013. The defendant was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal pending sentencing.

 

   

Peppermill's "Joseph Angus Burger" a Nebraska Best Burger Finalist

The Nebraska Beef Council announced that the Joseph Angus Burger at the Peppermill & E. K. Valentine Lounge in Valentine, NE, has been voted a finalist in the Nebraska Best Burger contest.  The Peppermill will continue to the judge's portion of the countest, where a panel of anonymous judges will evaluate the top nominated burger at each finalist's restaurant based on taste, proper cooking and appearance.  The winning restaurant will be announced at the end of April and will be recognized by the beef industry as part of Nebraska Beef Month in May.  Other finalist locations, with their top nominated burger, are:  Dinker's Bar (Haystack Burger) in Omaha, Greta's Gourmet (Greta Burger) in Lincoln, Tommy Colina's Kitchen (Triple "B" Burger) in Omaha, and the Union Bar (Diet Burger) in Gering.  Online voting for the third annual Nebraska's Best Burger contest conluded on March 30th with the Consumer's Choice Award going to The Cellar in Kearney.  Their "Western Burger" received the most electronic votes during the online portion of the contest, but due to it's previous championship win in 2011, is not eligible for the award again.

Relay Ranchers Challenge April 18th.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Cherry County is having a Rancher’s Challenge during the KVSH comment show on Thursday April 18th at 10:15. All you will need to do is call KVSH with a pledge to FIGHT cancer. All funds raised will go to the Relay For Life of Cherry County, that will be held on June 22nd at the Valentine High School Track. Committee members will be on hand during the challenge, to tell you about the relay and what the American Cancer Society is doing to fight cancer. If you are not a rancher you are welcome to call in and add your pledge to this effort to rid cancer from future generations.
