Tribute to Vietnam Veterans Planned for July 27th

Several local area veterans organizations are working together to pay tribute to Vietnam War Veterans on July 27th in Valentine. According to organizers, Legion and Legion Auxiliaries from Wood Lake, Cody and Valentine plan to hold a parade and luncheon on July 27th to honor those who served in the Vietnam War. The parade will be held at 11am with a luncheon and program held afterwards. Organizers are currently compiling a list of area veterans who served in the war to send a personal invitation for them and their spouse to attend the event. If you know of a Vietnam War Veteran please call Bonnie Phillips at 376-5139 or Donna Blocker at 376-6832 to check and make sure their name is on the list. They also need addresses if you have them. You can also contact Donna Ries in Wood Lake. 2013 marks the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War.

 

Former Rosebud President Passes

Charles Colombe, 75, died Sunday, June 9, 2013, at Sanford USD Medical Center.
Survivors include his wife, Vi Colombe, Mission; sons, Wes Colombe and Ty Colombe, both of Mission; daughters Sid Colombe, Fairland, Okla., and Codi Colombe, Lyndale, Texas; brothers Robert “Bob” Colombe, Dallas, Texas, and Richard “Skinny” Colombe, Wayne “Red” Colombe and Jim Colombe, all of Mission; and sisters, Elaine Jones, Los Lunas, N.M., Patty Mench, Winston-Salem, N.C., and Barb Bordeaux, Mission.
A Celebration of Life service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 13, at the Sinte Gleska University Center in Antelope. .
Rooks Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

 

Rosebud Man Sentenced for Escape

United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Rosebud, South Dakota man convicted of Escape from Custody was sentenced on June 7, by Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken, U.S. District Court.
Justin Lee Gabriel, age 21, was sentenced to 12 months of imprisonment and ordered to pay $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Gabriel was indicted for Escape from Custody by a federal grand jury on September 25, 2012. On August 18, 2012 Gabriel left the Community Alternatives of the Black Hills and did not return. Gabriel pled guilty on January 28, 2013.
Gabriel was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshal.

   

Rosebud Man Charged

 

United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Rosebud, man has been indicted by a federal grand jury for Attempted Sexual Abuse of a Minor and Abusive Sexual Contact.

Kameron Jackson, age 20, was indicted by a federal grand jury on May 15. He appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on June 6, and pled not guilty to the indictment.

The investigation is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. Jackson was detained pending trial. A trial date has not been set.

 

Mission Woman Embezzlement Sentence

A South Dakota woman has been sentenced in federal court for embezzling rent money while managing a low-income apartment complex in the Rosebud Indian Reservation town of Mission.   Forty-nine-year-old Donna Peterson was sentenced to six months of home confinement and four years of probation. She also was fined $2,000 and ordered to pay more than $32,000 in restitution.   U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson says Peterson took the money while managing the Sunrise Village Apartment Complex from 1996 to 2008. She pleaded guilty to theft in March.
